Open letter to Scott Bedbury and the UOSOJC

Today I found out I was awarded the Scott Bedbury Scholarship, which helps send two students from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication to South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, TX. Applicants had to complete short video applications which were then round-tabled and presented to Scott. There was stiff competition from some brilliant students, but in the end, myself and Nicole Schultz-who rocked her application-were awarded the scholarship. I am incredibly excited and humbled by this and I must now stand at the podium and give thanks:

Scott, I must first extend my sincere gratitude for setting up the Bedbury Scholarship initially and second for choosing me as one of the 2010 scholars.

With this opportunity, it’s my mission to take full advantage of the time, the people and the community at South by Southwest 2010. Keeping my eyes, ears and mind open I will become a part of the future of not only media or advertising or branding but of the ever-shrinking world in which we all live, work and play.

I will take everything I see and synthesize it for all of those who cannot be there in person. Not only will I be sharing everything I’ve leaned with my peers and classmates, but I will also be sharing this with the world. Everything I make, produce or share will be available online for the world to see live and afterwards. All of this content will be licensed under Creative Commons and easily sharable so that what experiences and knowledge I will have gained can become the experience and knowledge of anyone, worldwide.

I would not have this opportunity without the people who came before me. Included are Scott Bedbury, Deborah Morrison, Kim Sheehan, Dave Koranda and Harsha Gangadharbatla. It’s also every other professor or boss or co-worker or friend who pushed me to achieve greatness beyond myself.

Thank you, Scott

Thank you, SOJC
