Betsy DeVos has been an education advocate for all of her adult life. Her interest in education began with her mother, who was a public school teacher. When she sent her own children to school, she realized not every child gets a chance at a quality education, and felt compelled to do something about it.For fifteen years, she served as an in school mentor for at risk children in the Grand Rapids, Michigan Public Schools. She has worked to empower parents and create new educational choices for students in 25 states and the District of Columbia.Her work goes much further than just education. She is the co-founder, with her husband Dick DeVos, of the Windquest Group. It is a privately held company that invests in the future of technology, manufacturing, and clean energy. THe company was founded in 1989.
Another aspect of Betsy DeVos’ life that is rewarding is her philanthropy work. She has served on the boards of many charitable and civic organizations like the Kenndey Center for the Performing Arts, Kids Hope USA, ArtPrize, Mars Hill Bible Church, and the Kendall College School of Design. She also mentors at Potter’s House in Grand Rapids, Michigan where her children went to school. It is an integral part of her and her family’s life.Her main goal is to is to be able to revolutionize education for all students, no matter where they have come from or what the family income is. Empowering parents with the help of tax credits or school vouchers, she hopes to give their children the best possible chance at a quality education.
