In 1909, Otto Kolschowsky, a German immigrant to the United States, founded a humble butcher shop and meat market known as Otto and Sons, USA. Located in Chicago, Illinois, the shop grew steadily over the years until 1955, when the fast-food giant McDonalds made them their first meat supplier. Over a hundred years later and Otto’s butcher shop has grown into the OSI Group, a global leader in the food solutions and supply industry. They specialize in providing unique and customized options to their clients, with a focus on safety, quality and innovation.
OSI Group has spent the last few years solidifying their global presence by acquiring production assets across Europe and China. In 2016, they acquired Flagship Food Group, a food service provider in the UK specializing in offerings such as frozen poultry and various sauces. Under the guidance of OSI, Flagship earned a Top Food Supplier award from Trade Monthly Magazine less than a year later in May 2017. Their UK operations also won a Globe of Honor Award from the British Safety Council in 2016, for their commitment to safe and conscientious production practices. They were one of only 18 companies worldwide to win the award. According to the council, “they are excellent in their environmental management throughout the business – from the shop floor to the boardroom.” In August 2017, OSI invested 17 million euros into their operations in Toledo, Spain. The investment doubled their production capacity from 12,000 tons annually to 24,000. Staying true to their convictions, the new expansion focused on sustainability and environmental awareness.
OSI Group has also been expanding their capacity in the United States, within their home state of Illinois. They spent over seven million dollars in June 2016 to acquire a Tyson Foods plant that was on the verge of shutting down. Many of the remaining employees were allowed to stay on and offered employment under the management of OSI Industries. They joined the rest of the 20,000 OSI Group employees spread out across 17 countries. With a revenue of over six billion dollars annually, the company is number 58 on Forbes largest private companies list. This allows them to offer their employees highly competitive benefits packages including several forms of health and life insurance, accidental death, tuition reimbursement, and many other rewards. As time goes on, OSI will be a company to watch as they continue to expand their capabilities.
